The earliest knowledge of a church in Scotts Hill was in 1796 when Bishop Francis Asbury came through preaching on his horseback circuit, his territory covering a region from New England to Georgia.
In the year 1819 property was acquired and the first meeting house was established in Scotts Hill, now the location of the Scotts Hill AME Church. In 1873 new property was given and a sanctuary, dedicated as the Wesleyan Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church, was built on the present Chapel location.
Tragically, in January 1931, fire completely destroyed the Chapel. The congregation immediately began construction on a new building, and the rebuilt Chapel was dedicated in April 1931 with a main auditorium and 5 classrooms for educational purposes. This simple but graceful Chapel served as the main sanctuary until 1988 and is still used regularly by the congregation for special events.
Wesleyan Chapel obtained their first full time pastor in 1985. With God’s blessings, plans to fund and build a new sanctuary with seating for 285 began in 1986 with the dedication in December 1988. Growth continued and a Christian Education/Fellowship building was completed in 1992 followed in 2000 with an Education Building expansion.
Presently we have nearly 1,000 members, and have been growing steadily each year.
As benefactors of our Christian legacy, Wesleyan Chapel is proud to be a warm, welcoming church with a long history of providing worship for the people of God in Scotts Hill. We welcome you to come and worship with us.
